Description

Juan Ramirez, Jr.’s collection of poetry and monologues, Juan by Juan, is an exploration of life, identity, and love featuring 15 poems from the popular writer, actor, and theater maker. The playful verse hits home with reflections on what it means to be a man called Juan in a place called The Bronx. Coupled with his poetry, this volume contains 14 monologues by Juan Ramirez Jr., for actors of all ages, genders, and identities.

Juan Ramirez, Jr., is an internationally produced and award-winning multi-hyphenated artist. Puerto Rican and Guatemalteco, Bronx born and raised, Juan champions the voiceless in his work. This collection breaks open a new window on his city and its people, capturing the energy and impact in verse and spoken word.

“Juan Ramirez, Jr.’s Juan by Juan, is what we poetry lovers desperately need; surprise. Being a theater disciple, Juan understands the value of surprise. Staying ahead of your audience is the quintessential tool a playwright must possess. Juan by Juan is a fun yet revealing read.”
– reg e gaines

“Juan’s work exudes such an earthiness and a nitty gritty passion that jumps right out of the page and knocks at the door of your heart.” – Celine Hispiche, artistic director, Celine’s Salon

BIOGRAPHY
Juan Ramirez, Jr. is an internationally produced and award-winning multi-hyphenated artist. Puerto Rican and Guatemalteco, he’s born-and-raised in The Boogie Down Bronx. At a young age, he first explored with screenwriting and storyboarding, then creating comics for fun, he became fascinated with words, carving them in wet cement and spraying graffiti on walls, then using charcoal on cotton rag paper. Visual language took him to Hip-Hop on street corners, which took him to poetry at open mics, where music took him to discovering playwriting in his undergrad, taking him to directing, producing, acting, and writing monologues, finally picking up filmmaking at grad school. Today, he continues to create in each of these mediums. His art focuses on giving a voice to the voiceless, artivism (art and activism), archiving stories, making the audience work, and revealing character truths in the most beautiful ways. As a poet, his work is a two-time entry into Arte Latino Now Exhibition, highlighting and archiving Latino art, featured artist with Art Defined’s Poetic Affair, IATI’s Tertulia and Nuyorican Poet’s Café, and published in Bronx Memoir Project: Volume V. His plays were selected and performed with Yaddo, Rattlestick Theater, Repertorio Español, Bronx Council on the Arts, Pa’lante Theater, Destinos Festival with Subtext Studio Theater Company, and others. He’s a two-time Bronx Recognizes Its Own Award winner, Dramatists Guild member, Dramatists Guild Fellow, Yaddo Fellowship, resident dramatist at Art Defined, Inc., Playwriting Lab Director at MCC, NYU adjunct and Juan Man Show, LLC monologue catalogue writer, receiving his BA from Lehman College and his MFA from NYU Tisch.
