BUCKLED
by Helen Jeffery
A sharp, compassionate play about alcohol,
denial and recovery
Buckled is a gripping 60-minute play for three actors that explores what happens when drinking stops being background noise and starts shaping every relationship in the room. Funny, unsettling and deeply humane, it looks at addiction not as an abstract issue but as something lived day by day: in families, in friendships, in missed chances, in shame, in silence and in the long, uneven work of trying to change.
As Callum prepares for his wedding, his mother Maggie is almost six months sober and trying to rebuild the trust her drinking destroyed. At the same time, his lifelong friend Ruby insists that alcohol is still just part of having a good time. Across a series of fast-moving scenes, Buckled asks difficult questions with honesty and wit: when does social drinking become something more dangerous? How does addiction affect the people around the drinker? And what does recovery really look like when apology alone is not enough?
Rather than offering easy answers, the play shows alcohol harm in three dimensions: the person trying to stay sober, the adult child carrying the effects of a parent’s drinking, and the friend still caught in denial. Maggie attends AA meetings and begins the painful process of making amends; Callum joins a support group for children of alcoholics; Ruby’s drinking starts to affect her work, relationships and memory, even as she resists the idea that she has a problem. The result is a play that is emotionally accessible, dramatically strong and ideal for conversation afterwards.
Helen Jeffery’s Buckled is particularly valuable for:
- theatre companies looking for a discussion-provoking small-cast play
- community and outreach settings
- recovery and support environments
- prison education or rehabilitation contexts
- colleges, universities and youth theatres wanting material that opens up real debate
- post-show panels and facilitated conversations around addiction, recovery and family impact
That suitability is reinforced by the script itself, which includes AA and support-group scenes, recovery language and an ending that offers hope without pretending everything is neatly resolved. The published text also includes alcohol support service information.
Staging and Performance
Written with an energetic style in mind, Buckled combines fast, rhythmic scene changes with naturalistic social observation. It can be staged simply, using minimal furniture and props, making it especially well suited to small spaces, studio performance, touring, student productions and adaptable outreach settings. The script notes also allow flexibility in approach, so companies can shape the production to their own venue and audience.

“A tight, well-written and well-executed examination of a wider, recognisable societal problem—an England where there’s always an excuse to have a drink, and seemingly no good reason to stop. Mature, intelligent work with plenty to say and a big heart.”
Vicky Anderson—Made Up Liverpool
“Buckled is a brilliant new piece of writing from Helen Jeffery, sensitively exploring an important topic. Moving, humorous and excellently staged.”
Elinor Randle—Artistic Director, Unity Theatre
