Our story

Salamander Street is a boutique independent publisher, run by staff with nearly two decades’ worth of experience in theatre publishing. Founder Publisher George Spender was previously Editorial Director at Oberon Books, where he published Scottish playwrights Douglas Maxwell, Kieran Hurley, Gary McNair, Jo Clifford, AJ Taudevin and James Ley, among others, as well as playwrights Duncan Macmillan, Robert Icke, Simon Stone, Laura Wade, Tanika Gupta and Alice Birch. After leaving London for Leith, Edinburgh, George felt there was a gap in the market for a Scottish theatre publisher, and Salamander Street was established. Now based in Bristol, the company is preparing to ramp up production in 2020.

As well as script publishing, Salamander Street is able to promote and administer the amateur rights to its plays, providing authors with a source of income and ensuring a legacy for plays that might otherwise be lost. Staying true to its roots, and establishing partnerships with Glasgow’s A Play, A Pie and A Pint, and the Village Pub Theatre in Leith, the company aims to grow and become a crucial part of the theatre community in Scotland, whilst publishing throughout the UK, and eventually the USA.

Inspired by the legendary Scottish publisher John Calder, Salamander Street will also establish a theatre in translation list, bringing the best in world drama to UK audiences and ensuring an outward facing, diverse range of plays are available to readers.

Our scripts will be professionally typeset and designed to be useful for actors and directors. Where possible we will include academic introductions, notes on the original production and other supplementary information.

We are doing it for the love of publishing plays and supporting playwrights. We hope you will consider joining us.
